What to know before you switch

Switching takes about 2 weeks

Your supply never stops during a switch. The new provider handles the changeover with your current provider. You do not need to call your old provider first.

You need a BSN to sign up

All major Dutch energy providers require a BSN (Burgerservicenummer) to create a contract. If you have not yet received your BSN, you cannot sign up independently. Check our BSN registration guide for how to get yours.

Utilities may already be included in your rent

Many Dutch rental contracts include utilities (gas, electricity, water) in the rent. Check your lease agreement before signing up with an energy provider. See our utilities guide for details on what is typically included.

Average Dutch household usage

A typical Dutch household uses approximately 2,500 kWh of electricity and 1,500 m3 of gas per year. An apartment without gas central heating uses significantly less gas. Use these figures when entering your usage into a comparison tool.

UnitedConsumers is another option

UnitedConsumers is a Dutch member cooperative offering energy contracts alongside car and health insurance. Check our energy and heating guide for a broader overview including smaller providers.
