Understanding eigen risico and add-ons

The eigen risico is the amount you pay yourself each year before your insurance starts covering costs. The mandatory minimum is €385 (the same at every insurer). You can voluntarily increase it to save on your monthly premium, but you pay more out-of-pocket if you do need care. The discount varies significantly: Univé and UnitedConsumers save €22/mo at €885, VinkVink only saves €5/mo, and Menzis gives no discount at intermediate tiers (only at €885).

Dental (basic) covers

  • 1-2 check-ups per year
  • Basic cleaning
  • Simple fillings and small repairs
  • Not covered: crowns, implants, orthodontics

Physio add-on covers

  • Basic includes 3 sessions (chronic only)
  • Add-on: 6-12 extra sessions per year
  • Good for sports injuries, back pain
  • Not needed if you rarely see a physio

Worldwide/abroad covers

  • Emergency treatment anywhere in the world
  • Hospital stays and repatriation if needed
  • Essential for expats visiting family abroad
  • From €1,50/mo (ASR) to €2,95/mo (Univé)
  • One of the cheapest add-ons with the most value
