Moving within the Netherlands as an expat

Registration, movers, costs and how to use Zoofy for the handyman tasks movers do not cover.

Last updated: May 13, 2026✓ Verified May 2026

Moving from one Dutch address to another seems simple, but as an expat you need to deal with municipal registration, landlords, movers, steep staircases, concrete ceilings and sometimes a change of city. Doing this well avoids fines, benefit problems and a lot of stress. If you are still arriving in the Netherlands rather than moving inside it, start with the moving to the Netherlands complete guide.

This guide explains how address registration works when you move within the Netherlands, what movers cost, how to choose between DIY and professional help, and how to use Zoofy for moving helpers, furniture disassembly/assembly and last-mile handyman jobs. For English-speaking handymen in general, see our handyman services guide, and for IKEA-specific moves, our IKEA delivery and assembly guide.

Quick answer

  • When you move within the Netherlands, you must register your new address with your new municipality. Most allow this from a few weeks before until five days after the move. Failing to register can result in a fine and benefit problems.
  • Dutch movers (verhuizers) typically charge €35-€60/hr per mover. Small local moves cost €300-€800; larger or more complex moves go above €1,000.
  • Platforms like Zoofy are ideal for moving helpers: disassembling and assembling furniture, removing lamps and rails, filling holes and reinstalling everything in your new home, which most movers do not fully cover.

Changing your address when moving within the Netherlands

When you move to a new address in the Netherlands, you are legally required to register your new address with the municipality (gemeente). This applies whether you move within the same municipality or to a different one. Being incorrectly registered can cause problems with benefits, health insurance, voting and taxes, and municipalities can impose fines if you fail to report your move in time.

According to guidance aimed at internationals, you can usually register your new address from up to two weeks before moving until five days after the move. Some municipalities, such as Zeist, explicitly allow you to notify them up to 28 days before your moving date, but still require that you do so no later than five days after moving. Always check your own municipality's website for the exact timing and procedure. Our BRP registration guide covers the wider Dutch population register and how address history affects later applications.

How to register your move (same city vs different city)

If you move within the same municipality, you usually log in to the municipal website with DigiD, fill in a change-of-address form and upload a copy of your rental contract, purchase deed or permission letter from the main occupant. When you move to a new municipality, you submit a "moving to this municipality" form online or at the city hall; the new municipality then automatically deregisters you from your old municipality, so you do not need to deregister separately.

The official date of your address change is normally the moving date you provide, as long as you notify the municipality within the allowed window. If you report the move late, the date of notification may become the official date, which can affect benefits or allowances linked to your registered address. Keep confirmation emails or letters for your records, especially if you receive housing allowance (huurtoeslag), healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag) or other benefits.

Movers in the Netherlands: what they do

Professional movers (verhuisbedrijven) usually handle packing (if you pay extra), carrying boxes and furniture down and up stairs, transport between addresses and basic protection of your belongings with blankets and straps. Many Dutch movers are used to old houses with steep stairs and will bring tools and extra staff to manage awkward items.

For more complete moves, you can also request packing and unpacking services, temporary storage and the use of a moving lift (verhuislift) for high floors. International relocation companies often offer broader packages including immigration and settling-in services, but for a move within the Netherlands you usually do not need that level of service unless it is part of a corporate relocation package.

Typical moving costs within the Netherlands

Type of moveTypical costNotes
Per mover, per hour€35-€60Often 2-3 movers per job
Small local move (studio / 1-bed)€300-€800Same city, few stairs
Two-bedroom apartment€500-€1,500Per Dutch cost overviews
Larger / complex move€1,000-€3,000Many stairs, long walks, external lift
Moving lift (verhuislift)+€150-€350For high floors or awkward stairwells

These are only indicative ranges. The actual price depends on how much you move, how well you are packed, how easy access is at both addresses and which services (packing, disassembly, storage) you include. For a full picture of move-in setup costs, see our relocation budget guide.

DIY move vs hiring professional movers

DIY (van + friends)

  • • Studio or 1-bed with minimal furniture
  • • Same city, short distance
  • • You have help and physical strength
  • • Comfortable with parking and time-window rules

Professional movers

  • • Families and larger households
  • • High floors and heavy furniture
  • • Lots of IKEA wardrobes or solid wood pieces
  • • Fragile items or long distances

A hybrid is also common: hire professional movers for the big items and boxes, but use a platform like Zoofy for pre- and post-move handyman tasks such as disassembling PAX wardrobes, removing lamps and filling holes.

Using Zoofy for moving helpers and handyman work

Most movers do not fully cover tasks like removing ceiling lamps, taking down curtain rails, patching holes in walls or reinstalling everything in your new apartment - yet these are exactly the jobs many expats find hardest because of concrete ceilings and lack of tools. Zoofy is ideal for booking a vetted handyman before and/or after your move to handle these tasks.

You can book specific jobs such as "IKEA assembly", "lamps & lighting", "curtain rails", "handyman" or "minor repairs" and schedule them strategically around your moving date. This lets movers focus on transporting boxes and furniture while a Zoofy handyman deals with the detail jobs your landlord and new neighbours actually care about.

Plan your Zoofy visits around moving day

Use one Zoofy visit before the move for disassembly and one after for installation. That way your old home is left in good condition for the inspection, and your new home is livable much faster.

Relocation services vs regular movers

Expats on Reddit often ask about "relocation services" that handle more than just moving boxes, such as house hunting, school support and registration help. Companies mentioned in these discussions include international movers and specialist relocation agencies that coordinate finding housing, arranging utilities and navigating Dutch bureaucracy.

For a move within the Netherlands, you normally only need such services if your employer provides them as part of a relocation package or if you want full support in English for everything around the move. In most cases, combining regular movers with targeted help (Zoofy for practical jobs, your own research for registration and utilities) is more cost-effective and flexible. If you are still looking for housing, our securing housing guide covers income rules, viewings and scam-free platforms.

Landlord, utilities and admin checklist

Beyond registration and movers, do not forget to:

  • Check your notice period and inspection rules. Dutch rental contracts often require written notice (commonly one calendar month) and have end-of-tenancy cleaning and minor repair obligations. Read your contract carefully.
  • Transfer or cancel utilities and internet. Providers typically let you move your contract to a new address or end it with notice. Missing this can mean double bills. See our utilities and bills guide and telecommunications guide.
  • Arrange contents insurance (inboedelverzekering). Update your policy with the new address and property type so you stay covered.
  • Update employers and institutions. Inform your employer, school, bank and insurance companies of your new registered address so their records stay aligned with the municipal register.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to deregister from my old municipality when I move within the Netherlands?

No. If you move to a different municipality within the Netherlands and register your new address there, that municipality automatically deregisters you from your old one. You only need to make sure you file the new address in time and keep the confirmation.

How early can I register my new Dutch address?

Guidance for internationals states you can generally register from up to two weeks before your moving date and up to five days after the move. Some municipalities explicitly allow notification up to 28 days before the move, while still using a five-day window afterwards as the deadline, so always check your specific municipality's website.

What happens if I forget to register my move within the Netherlands?

If you do not register your new address correctly, you may receive a fine and your benefits, insurance and taxes may be affected because they rely on your registered address. For example, housing allowance (huurtoeslag) and certain municipal services are linked to where you are officially registered.

How much does it cost to move a two-bedroom apartment within the same Dutch city?

Indicative Dutch sources suggest small to medium local moves cost roughly €300-€800 depending on volume, distance, stairs and whether you use packing services. Other overviews report typical ranges of about €500-€1,500 for a two-bedroom apartment in the Netherlands, with per-mover hourly rates of around €35-€60.

Are Dutch movers used to steep staircases and no elevator?

Yes. Most Dutch moving companies are very used to narrow, steep staircases and will adapt their staffing and equipment accordingly. For extremely tight spaces or higher floors, they may recommend a moving lift (verhuislift), which comes with additional costs but can save a lot of time and risk.

Can Zoofy replace a moving company in the Netherlands?

Zoofy is not a full moving company; it is best used for specific handyman-type tasks such as disassembling and assembling furniture, installing lamps and rails, and handling small repairs and finishing touches. For transporting a whole household you still need either a professional moving company or a rented van plus friends, but Zoofy can make both the move-out and move-in much smoother.

Should I hire movers or rent a van for a small move?

If you have few belongings, are physically able to carry items and have some help, renting a van and doing a DIY move can save money. For larger households, many stairs or long distances, professional movers are usually worth the cost in terms of time, safety and reduced stress.

Do I need to inform the IND when moving within the Netherlands?

If you already hold a valid Dutch residence permit, changing your address with the municipality is normally enough; the new address is shared with national authorities through the population register (BRP). If you are in a more complex immigration situation (pending applications or special schemes), check the IND website or your lawyer to see whether additional notifications are required.
