FBTO vs InShared legal insurance 2026: a fixed package or modules

Two Achmea brands, two very different ways of selling the same kind of cover.

Last updated: October 3, 2026Verified October 2026

FBTO and InShared are both owned by Achmea, and both sell legal insurance (rechtsbijstandverzekering) without an excess. The difference is the shape of the product. FBTO's Basis package bundles the conflicts renters run into most into one price. InShared lets you buy four modules separately and cancel on any day.

We quoted both on 3 October 2026 for one adult. For the wider market, including Univé, Centraal Beheer, ASR, Allianz Direct and Legalec, see our legal insurance comparison.

The short answer

Renting and employed? FBTO Basis at €10.97 covers your work, your rented home and your purchases for less than half of InShared's equivalent.

Own a home, want one module only, or might leave soon? InShared, because you choose exactly what you pay for and can cancel on any day.

FBTO: one package for the common conflicts

FBTO offers two products. The Basis package is a fixed bundle you cannot change, apart from adding the Verkeer module. It covers conflicts over things you buy online or in a shop, over your rented home or room, and at work or in education. FBTO calls it its most chosen option for one person.

The second product lets you build your own policy from five modules: Consument & Wonen, Verkeer, Werk, Inkomen & Pensioen, Familie, Belasting & Vermogen, and Medisch. That is the route for homeowners or anyone who wants inheritance or tax cover.

Best for: renters who want work and housing cover at the lowest price.

InShared: four modules and no lock-in

InShared prices each module separately. For one adult aged 30: Consument & Wonen €11.75, Werk & Inkomen €11.00, Familie & Vermogen €4.50 and Ongeval & Verkeer €3.75. Everyone living at your address and registered there is insured with you.

You can cancel on any day and get any unused premium back. InShared also returns part of the premium at year end if its claims pool has money left, though that payout is not guaranteed and should not be counted as a discount.

Best for: homeowners, people who want a single module, and anyone who may leave the Netherlands.

What applies to both

Neither covers a conflict that started before your policy, and both make you wait 3 months for most cover. If you already have a dispute with an employer or landlord, read our guides on a settlement agreement or a deposit that was not returned instead.

Neither policy is built for IND applications: legal insurance covers disputes, not permit procedures. For that, see our immigration lawyers guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which is cheaper, FBTO or InShared legal insurance?

For a renter who wants work and housing cover, FBTO. Its Basis package costs €10.97 a month for one person. The closest InShared combination, Werk & Inkomen plus Consument & Wonen, costs €22.75 for one adult aged 30, so FBTO saves €11.78 a month or about €141 a year.

Are FBTO and InShared the same company?

Both belong to the Achmea group, but they are separate brands with separate products and prices. InShared has legal cases handled by Stichting Achmea Rechtsbijstand and, for accidents, LegalShared.

Do both have a waiting period?

Yes, 3 months on most cover. Traffic is the exception at both: FBTO's Verkeer module and InShared's Ongeval & Verkeer module have no waiting period.

Which is better if I own my home?

Not FBTO Basis, which covers your rented home or room. Homeowners need FBTO's modular policy or InShared's Consument & Wonen module, which covers conflicts over buying or renting your home.

Can I take only one module?

At InShared, yes: each of the 4 modules can be taken on its own, from €3.75 a month for Ongeval & Verkeer. FBTO also offers a modular policy with 5 modules alongside the fixed Basis package.
