Blauwe envelop
Blue tax envelope
What does Blauwe envelop mean?
A blauwe envelop is a letter from the Belastingdienst (tax office) or Dienst Toeslagen (benefits office). It can hold a tax assessment, a provisional assessment, a benefits decision, a payment reminder or a request for information. Most of these are formal decisions with a 6-week objection window that starts on the date printed on the letter, so it pays to open it the day it arrives.
Key facts
| Sender | Belastingdienst or Dienst Toeslagen |
| Objection deadline on decisions | 6 weeks from the date on the letter |
| Digital alternative | Berichtenbox in MijnOverheid, opt-in since 8 December 2025 |
| If you choose nothing | Letters keep coming on paper in the blue envelope |
What to do
- Open it straight away and find the date on the letter (dagtekening). Every deadline counts from that date, not from when you read it.
- Look for the letter type in the heading: aanslag (assessment), beschikking (decision), betalingsherinnering or aanmaning (payment reminders).
- If an amount is due, note the payment date. Late payment moves quickly from reminder to enforcement order with extra costs.
- If the figures look wrong, you have 6 weeks to file a bezwaar (objection), usually online through Mijn Belastingdienst.
- Keep every letter. You need them for your next tax return, benefit applications and when you leave the Netherlands.
Worth knowing
Moving house? The Belastingdienst uses your address in the BRP. Register your new address with the gemeente on time, or the blue envelope goes to your old address while the deadline still runs.
Frequently asked questions
Is every blue envelope bad news?
No. Many are routine: a provisional assessment for next year, a refund, or confirmation of a benefit. It only becomes urgent when it contains a payment demand or a decision you disagree with, and both come with fixed deadlines.
Can I stop receiving blue envelopes?
Yes. Since 8 December 2025 you can choose to receive Belastingdienst post digitally in the Berichtenbox of MijnOverheid. The option is rolled out per tax type, starting with income tax. If you do not choose, post keeps arriving on paper.
What if the blue envelope went to my old address?
Deadlines still count from the date on the letter. Register your new address with the gemeente, call the BelastingTelefoon on 0800-0543, and if a deadline has passed explain in writing why you missed it. A late objection can be accepted when the delay was not your fault.
