What is Insify?

Insify is a Dutch insurtech platform specialising in freelancer (ZZP) insurance. Founded in 2019, it bundles AOV (arbeidsongeschiktheidsverzekering, income protection), BAV (beroepsaansprakelijkheidsverzekering, professional liability), and AVB (aansprakelijkheidsverzekering bedrijven, business liability) in one digital platform. The English-language interface and support make it the go-to option for expat freelancers in the Netherlands who want to avoid broker appointments and Dutch-only systems.

Before going freelance as a ZZP worker, you need to have your BSN registration sorted and a KVK (Kamer van Koophandel) number. Once those are in place, Insify lets you get quotes and start coverage in a single online session with no broker involvement.

Key advantages for expat freelancers

  • 100% English platform, quote, and support, no Dutch required
  • Instant online quotes, policy starts same day (BAV/AVB) or within 3 days (AOV)
  • All three ZZP insurance types in one dashboard
  • No minimum contract period, cancel with 1-month notice (BAV/AVB) or 3-month (AOV)
  • Digital insurance certificates accepted by all major Dutch corporate clients

The three insurance types Insify offers

Insify covers the three standard ZZP insurance types. Each serves a different purpose and most corporate clients require proof of all three before signing contracts with freelancers. See our detailed freelancer insurance Netherlands guide for a full breakdown of legal requirements by profession.

AOV

Income protection (arbeidsongeschiktheidsverzekering)

AOV protects your income if you become ill or disabled and cannot work. As a ZZP freelancer in the Netherlands, you have no access to the employer sick pay system. If you stop working due to illness, your income stops immediately. AOV fills this gap by paying 70-80% of your declared income until you recover or reach the AOW pension age of 67.

Coverage details

  • Covers 70-80% of your daily rate / declared income
  • Pays out until age 67 (AOW pension age)
  • Covers illness, burnout, disability
  • Waiting periods: 14 days, 1 month, 2 months, 3 months

Cost at Insify

  • From €59/month: Insify's example for age 37, a physically light job, a €1,000/month indexed benefit and a 3-month waiting period, including the 20% first-year discount
  • A higher benefit costs roughly proportionally more: about €140/month for €2,400
  • Older age, a riskier job or a shorter waiting period raise the premium

Important: AOV is not legally mandatory for ZZP workers, but approximately 78% of corporate clients require proof of income protection before signing contracts. The Dutch government is also working on making AOV compulsory for ZZP workers, expected 2026-2027. Starting early means lower premiums and avoiding pre-existing condition exclusions.

BAV

Professional liability (beroepsaansprakelijkheidsverzekering)

BAV covers claims from clients if your professional advice or work causes financial damage. A practical example: you write code with a bug that costs your client €50,000 in lost revenue. Without BAV, you would be personally liable. Insify's BAV covers this up to the policy limit.

Coverage details

  • Coverage levels: €250k, €500k, €1M, €2.5M per incident
  • Covers professional errors, advice failures, data breaches
  • Includes legal defense costs

Cost at Insify

  • From €35,30/month (insify.nl, October 2026)
  • Higher insured amounts cost more
  • Riskier professions pay more; get a quote for your exact profession

Legally mandatory for: lawyers, notaries, accountants, tax advisors, architects, engineers, medical professionals, and financial advisors. Contractually required by virtually all corporate clients in IT, consulting, finance, and creative sectors.

AVB

Business liability (aansprakelijkheidsverzekering bedrijven)

AVB covers damage you accidentally cause to third parties or their property during work. A practical example: you spill coffee on a client's €3,000 laptop at their office. Without AVB, you pay out of pocket. With AVB, Insify covers the claim.

Coverage details

  • Coverage: €1M to €2.5M per incident
  • Covers accidental property damage, personal injury to third parties
  • Required for most on-site client work

Cost at Insify

  • From €7,95/month (insify.nl, October 2026)
  • Office-based work sits at the low end
  • Event or on-site intensive work costs more

Insify pricing (2026 verified)

Insify pricing depends on your profession, age, insured amount and chosen cover, so it only publishes starting prices. The table shows those, as stated on insify.nl on 5 October 2026. Use the AOV insurance calculator for a rough estimate at your own age and income, then get an exact quote from Insify.

Insurance typeFromWhat the starting price assumes
AOV (income protection)€59/moAge 37, physically light job, €1,000/month indexed benefit, 3-month waiting period, including the 20% first-year discount. A higher benefit costs proportionally more.
BAV (professional liability)€35,30/moLowest-risk professions and the basic insured amount; higher limits and riskier professions cost more.
AVB (business liability)€7,95/moBasic cover for a low-risk business.
All three combined€102,25/moSum of the three starting prices

After tax deductions

BAV and AVB premiums are business expenses. AOV premiums are deductible in box 1 as an income provision (uitgaven voor inkomensvoorzieningen). Either way, they reduce taxable income at your marginal rate, which in 2026 is 37.56% on income from €38,883 to €78,426.

~€37/mo
AOV starting price after 37.56% tax relief
~€27/mo
BAV plus AVB starting prices after 37.56% tax relief
~€64/mo
All three starting prices after 37.56% tax relief

Higher earners save more: above €78,426 the 2026 rate is 49.50%, so every €100 in premiums saves €49.50. All three starting prices together (€102,25/month) then cost about €51.64/month after tax relief.

Who Insify is best for

Insify is the strongest option in the Netherlands for the following types of ZZP freelancers:

Expat freelancers who need English-language support

Full English platform, quotes, and customer service. No Dutch language required at any point.

ZZP workers who want all three coverages in one place

Single dashboard for AOV, BAV, and AVB. One monthly invoice, one insurer to contact.

IT, consulting, marketing, finance, creative, and engineering professionals

These are the professions where Insify has the deepest coverage and most competitive pricing.

Freelancers who need BAV or AVB quickly before starting a new contract

BAV and AVB can be activated same day. Print your certificate immediately and share it with your client.

Freelancers aged 25-45 in good health

AOV pricing is most competitive for this age group. Use the AOV insurance calculator to estimate your cost.

Who should consider alternatives

Insify is not always the best fit. Consider comparing alternatives for these situations:

Professions with very high liability requirements

Lawyers, medical professionals, and anyone needing BAV coverage above €2.5M may need Aegon or Allianz, which offer higher limits and sector-specific policy terms.

Freelancers over 45 with pre-existing health conditions

AOV premiums rise significantly with age and health issues. Nationale Nederlanden and Aegon sometimes offer more flexibility on exclusions for complex health histories.

Very low-budget freelancers who only need BAV

ZZP Verzekeringen offers slightly cheaper single-product BAV for Dutch-speaking freelancers who do not need the English interface or the full bundle.

For a full comparison of all major Dutch freelancer insurance providers, see our guide to which freelancer insurance you need. Most expat freelancers in the standard 25-45 age range working in knowledge industries will find Insify competitive across all three coverage types.

Tax deductibility

All three Insify premiums (AOV, BAV, AVB) are 100% tax-deductible as zakelijke kosten (business expenses) in Box 1. This applies regardless of whether you operate as a sole trader (eenmanszaak) or through a BV. You declare them as business costs in your annual tax return, reducing your taxable profit.

Tax bracketIncome rangeTax saved per €100 in premiumsEffective cost of €100 premium
Standard rate€38,883 to €78,426€37.56€62.44
Higher rateAbove €78,426€49.50€50.50

Important note on AOV payouts

AOV premiums are deductible, but AOV payouts (if you ever claim) are taxable as income. BAV and AVB payouts are not taxable. For a complete picture of how insurance interacts with your Dutch tax position, the freelancer insurance guide covers this in detail.

Frequently asked questions

Is Insify the cheapest freelancer insurance in the Netherlands?

Insify is competitive but not always the cheapest for every profession and age. For IT, consulting, and creative professions aged 25-40, Insify typically offers the best combination of price and convenience. For professions requiring very high BAV limits (€2.5M+) or freelancers over 45 with health considerations, comparing Aegon, Nationale Nederlanden, or Allianz directly is worthwhile. The key advantage of Insify is the instant online quote without a broker, saving hours of back-and-forth.

Does Insify cover expats who are not Dutch citizens?

Yes. Insify covers freelancers registered with KVK (Dutch Chamber of Commerce) regardless of nationality. You need a valid Dutch address, BSN number, KVK registration, and Dutch bank account. EU/EEA nationals and non-EU nationals with a valid residence permit and work rights can use Insify.

How quickly can I get covered with Insify?

BAV and AVB can start the same day you apply. AOV typically starts within 1-3 business days after a health declaration. If you have an urgent client contract requiring proof of insurance, BAV and AVB can be activated immediately. Print or download your insurance certificate directly from the Insify dashboard.

What is the waiting period for AOV at Insify?

Insify offers AOV waiting periods of 14 days, 1 month, 2 months, and 3 months. The waiting period is the time between becoming ill/disabled and when payouts begin. A longer waiting period means lower monthly premiums but more personal financial risk during the gap. Most financial advisors recommend a 1-month waiting period as the default, matching most freelancers' cash reserves.

Can I cancel Insify insurance at any time?

BAV and AVB at Insify have a 1-month cancellation notice period. AOV has a 3-month notice period due to the longer-term nature of income protection. There is no penalty for cancellation. If you stop freelancing or switch to employment, you can cancel all policies without fees.

Is Insify regulated in the Netherlands?

Yes. Insify is regulated by the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) and De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB). It is licensed as an insurance intermediary and the underlying insurance policies are underwritten by regulated Dutch and European insurers.

Before you buy an AOV, know the alternative

Many Dutch freelancers use a Broodfonds instead of, or alongside, an AOV. It is a mutual aid circle from €37,50 a month (plus €12,50 fee) with no medical screening, but it stops after two years. Understanding where that ceiling sits changes which AOV waiting period you should buy, and pairing the two usually costs less than a standard AOV alone.
