Once you are registered in the BRP you have four months to take out Dutch basic health insurance, and the obligation applies from your registration date rather than from when you sign up. Student Registration InfoStadsloket or IN Amsterdam: which one is for you?
Everyone who will live in the Netherlands for more than 4 months must register with the municipality within 5 days of arrival. Registration is free, and not registering on time can lead to a fine of up to €325.
IN Amsterdam
IN Amsterdam, at the World Trade Center (Tower Two, Strawinskylaan 1767), serves eligible international newcomers, mostly highly skilled migrants whose employer arranges the appointment. You can register and collect your residence permit in one visit. If you register in Amsterdam or Amstelveen you get your BSN at the appointment; for other participating municipalities it takes about two days.
Stadsloket (city office)
Everyone else registers by appointment at a city office. Bring your passport or ID, proof of address such as a rental contract or the owner's permission, and legalised and translated birth and marriage certificates if they are not from the EU. Appointment availability changes from week to week, so book the day you know your address and check again for cancellations.
